Matrix Metelloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is part of the matrix metalloproteinase family presenting a group of structurally related zinc-containing proteolytic enzymes. These enzymes play an important role in tissue remodeling of extracellular matrix. MMP-9 is a 92 kDa protein with a sequence length of 707 amino acids that is produced by epithelial cells and is stored in the secretory granules of neutrophils and eosinophils. It has been shown to mediate vascular leakage and to initiate the migration of inflammatory cells inducing wound repair.

Plasma NGAL is a significant predictor of mortality and cardiovascular disease in community-dwelling older adults, independent of traditional risk factors and kidney function, and adds incremental value to NT-proBNP and CRP4.

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL)-Matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) complex, is complex of two independent protein (NGAL) and MMP-9. By complexing MMP-9, NGAL stabilise the MMP-9 et protect it from the proteolytic degradation and consequently increasing the enzymatic activity of MMP-9. Lipocalin-2 (LCN2), also known as oncogene 24p3 or neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), is a 24 kDa secreted glycoprotein and can promote MMP-9 activity in part by protecting MMP-9 from autolysis 1,2. NGAL can promote MMP-9 activity by forming a complex with the protease (NGAL/MMP-9).
